Ellie Anna's, Maine Woman Entrepreneur Highlight

Ellie Anna’s has been a staple in the LA area for over ten years! In 2009, the owner decided to make purses of her own at her kitchen table. While working out of her home, she attended markets, fairs, and local community events to market her brand to the public. She eventually moved her small business into her shed and turned it into a boutique space for her to work in! After two and a half years, she realized that her bags could become a business, which drove her to open a store-front, which is still currently located in Lewiston at 785 Main Street! They have grown so much in the building they are in. Every turn you take is an enticing product: Broomates, Doterra essential oils, and local soaps. You name it, they have it! The building is set up to be inviting and inspiring, especially when you are trying to find a gift for someone! They are now a certified jeep dealer (eek!), so you can find all of your #jeepgirl apparel there!

Albeit the company was first founded on purses, you can still find purses at the store! She is able to get more bags out in the store because she has a couple teammates that help her with sewing. “All my designs are still here and available!”

This business was also born upon the fact that there weren’t many gift shops in the Lewiston/Auburn area, so the owner knew this would be a great addition to the small business community that LA has to offer.

Her business has evolved greatly over the years. Not only is Ellie Anna’s a gift shop, but it is also a space for small business creators to have their product in. “This gives local makers a platform for their products. We carry over thirty made in Maine businesses and over 60 small businesses throughout the country. We try to keep up with what is trending and to keep items seasonal as well.”

The owner also stresses that going into small business will come with its challenges, however, once you find your niche, you’re going to succeed. She believes that since she offers a variety of made in Maine products that she is able to distinguish herself amongst her competitors. I think the proof is in the pudding with her belief system as her shop has been voted as the best boutique in Lewiston/Auburn for 10 years in a row!

Not only does she operate her store front, but she also maintains her website and app. Yes, she has an app! Furthermore, she incorporates FaceBook live into her business model as she has gained great traction from customers that way. It’s an engaging marketing tool while being able to show off new products. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Are you wondering what the name of her shop means?

It is based on her three children. Her logo is of three flowers, which represent her two daughters and son. The name of the store is of her two daughters. She has found that at times it can be challenging to balance motherhood and being a business owner, but in the end, it balances out. “It’s definitely a lot, especially around the holidays because I am at the shop a lot. I try to take advantage of the slow times during the year so I can spend time with my kids and my husband. There is nothing better than taking off in my Jeep with my girls on a hot summer day!”

We ended our conversation on a motivating note regarding a piece of advice she would give to a new business owner. “Consistency is key. Just know you’re going to put in a lot of work before it pays off. I don’t want that to be discouraging-it’s just important to know what you are getting into when you open your business. Also, whatever you are choosing to do, find your niche and stick with that. Don’t try to be somebody else because it will show that you are not being your authentic self. Being unique and coming up with your own take on your business and product/service will bring you success.”

It was a pleasure getting to know the owner, Sarah, and to learn valuable lessons about entrepreneurship and becoming your own boss. To learn more about the gift shop, follow them on Facebook, download their app, or visit their website!
